Green Wins But Gold Rocks |
|
|
By Rusty Blades Hockey Writer Midnight came for the Cinderella team of the Don Mills Civitan Hockey League. Team Dodge Gold, who spent the first half of the season in the basement of the Novice House League before winning eight straight games to reach the semi-finals, lost 5-3 to Team Dodge Green Saturday, ending the year one game short of the championship final. In Sunday’s final, Green defeated Team Dodge White 5-2 to claim the title. Saturday’s Gold-Green clash was a thrilling game before a packed house at Don Mills Civitan Arena. With fans from both teams in full voice and all the players looking to extend their season to the final day, the non-stop drama featured slick play-making, timely checking and stellar goaltending on both sides. Jack “The Surgeon” Kiely scored his second goal of the game on a feed from Brennan “Slo Mo” Leahey with 4:45 to go in the third to cut the Green lead to the slimmest of margins, 4-3. But with London “The Guard” Frieberg pulled for an extra attacker and Gold looking to score the equalizer which would extend this playoff classic – and their season – Green potted an empty-netter to punch their ticket to the final. Gold had opened the scoring in the first period when Evan “Red Rocket” Girard pounced on a loose puck on the edge of the goal crease to make it 1-0 from “Slo Mo” and “The Surgeon.” After Green tied it, “The Surgeon” scored his first of the day to make it 2-1, converting a rebound off a shot by the “Red Rocket.” But Green, displaying the characteristic of all championship teams, never gave up. Having run into the superb goaltending of “The Guard,” Green continued to pepper the Gold net, scoring three times before the end of the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the final 15 minutes. As all DMCHL fans have come to realize, the boys in gold are not the kind to give up. All three lines continued to win puck battles, create scoring chances and keep Green attackers at bay. In the end, Gold could get no closer than a goal, coming out on the short end of the score for the first time in nine games. But as they lined up to shake the hands of the well-deserved winners, the Gold players held their heads high, knowing that while the championship would have to wait they had done themselves proud.
